Handling Aggressive Drivers

“Road Rage” is a real threat to everyone using our roadways. Our Loss Control Department provides this information regarding these incidents. Recent government statistics indicate that tens of thousands of road rage incidents occur each year, resulting in over 12,000 injuries and over 200 fatalities annually. You, your families, and other drivers do not have to be victims of road rage, however. Help to protect yourself from road violence by remembering these tips.

  1. Be courteous to other drivers, even if they are not courteous to you.

  2. Don’t take other drivers’ mistakes personally.

  3. Do not make obscene gestures.

  4. Use your horn sparingly--to warn others, not to berate them.

  5. Do not block the passing lane --let faster traffic go by.

  6. Use your turn signals when turning and especially when changing lanes.

  7. Do not take more than one parking space.

  8. Avoid unnecessary use of high beams.

  9. Keep your radio-stereo at an acceptable level.

  10. Avoid “emotional” or offensive bumper stickers.

  11. Don’t “tailgate” other vehicles, or allow yourself to be boxed in with other vehicles. Keep plenty of “space” (distance and time) in front of , behind, and on either side of your vehicle, so you’ll have more than one “out” in case you need to use them.

  12. Use your seatbelt, and make sure all of your vehicle’s occupants do likewise.

Above all, drive safely, as if your life depended on it, because it does!!
